May Life Skill: Self Respect

At Peak Performance, we build our kids up to be champions in life!

One of the ways we do this is through our Life Skills program. We have a total of 12 Life Skills, one for every month. Each month, we go over the Life Skill: defining the skill, telling them examples, having them provide examples, working on each Life Skill at home, and we also try to incorporate the Life Skill into our class.

This months Life Skill is Self-Respect: pride and confidence in oneself; a feeling that one is behaving with honor and dignity.

What ways does Peak help teach Self - Respect?

Positive Thoughts

We always try to help the kids think positively about themselves and what they are able to do. We want to make sure that they feel good about themselves and carry themselves with a positive attitude. So, if we catch them saying negative things about themselves, like "I can't," or "I suck at this," or whatever negative thought, we always make sure to turn things around.

As coaches, we do our best to have them believe they can do anything they want with the right mindset and determination. Turning your outlook/mindset to a positive one will help to build up confidence and respect in oneself.

Personal Hygiene

We teach the kids the importance of having good personal hygiene by not being like “Dirty Danny”. “Dirty Danny” is our poster guy of unhygienic practices for the gym. Practicing good hygiene by brushing their teeth, washing their hands, taking a bath/shower, covering wounds, having clean gear, etc...helps teach respect for themselves.

Doing the Right Thing

We help the kids learn what is the right thing to do by having them treat others in a positive way. We have them help each other up, be good partners, show support for their teammates, and show them that it’s not alright to hurt each other. Doing the right thing will teach them to behave with honor and dignity.

Examples

At the end of every class, we always try to go over what the Life Skill of the month is, and we always have them provide examples. We also assign them simple homework in which they have to share next time in class. By doing this, it causes them to think about the Life Skill more, and not just in class.

Every day in class, we ask them what the Life Skill of the month is (this month it is Self-Respect), what does Self-Respect mean, and we ask them in what ways can they show Self-Respect.
